GOLFERS NEWSLETTER JULY 2008

Dear friends of Queens,

GOLF TIPS
Last month, we launched the first of our series of golf tips.  We hope you found the tips on putting useful and have reduced your chances of 3 putting.  As the saying goes – “Drive for Show and Putt for Dough”.

This month, our pros discuss a variety of shots you will commonly use around the green.  Soak it in as these will help you shave some strokes off your score.

If you often ‘top’ your chip shot, it could be the result of a back swing which is too flat, causing you to hit the upper part of the ball instead of going under it.

Here’s a good drill to practise the correct back swing for your chip shots:

* Place another ball ’B’ about 8 inches behind your ball ‘A’.

* Take a steep back swing to ensure it does not hit ball ‘B’.  This will allow you to go under the ball when when making impact.

* If the back of your club touches ball 'B', causing it to roll backwards, your back swing is too flat and you will ‘top’ your chip and lose control of your shot.

More tips can be found here...

PRO-STUDENT FRIENDLY GAME
The golf outing on 20th June to Tering Bay was a light-hearted event and it was a pleasure to see our students trying their hand at the “Challenge Your Pro” novelty on the Par 3.  Those who managed to put their ball closer than their respective pros won for themselves Nike golf balls.  It was a good time to sabotage our pros and they were made to tackle the Par 3s hitting with drivers, 64 deg wedges and left-handed clubs.  One team even blindfolded their pro!

We also gave away a Nike IC Putter in the “Challenge Yourself” novelty which was held during lunch.  It was a simple challenge but the task didn’t seem as simple as it looked.  After a play-off with 10 other participants, Anthony Tan emerged the winner by putting all 3 balls into a small designated space.

The team event was won by Eng Wah’s Team A and individual prizes were also presented to the Best Gross winner Winson Tay (Gross 83) and the Best Nett winner Matthew Yong (Nett 73).

For those who missed the game, look out for information on the next one and join us for lots of fun!

CORPORATE EVENT
Staff from RICOH gathered at Queens for a longest drive contest last month.  With 2 prior practise sessions organised by the company, the participants had a fun time trying to out drive one another.

MAINTENANCE DAY
July 21 (Monday) will be our next maintenance day.  We will be closed from 9am – 12pm to facilitate cleaning and maintenance works.  Any inconvenience caused is regretted.
