Reduce Your Score with Course Strategy

The key to playing with great strategy is to know your strengths and weaknesses. For instance, if the greenside bunker is your biggest enemy, try by all means to avoid it.
Here's an example : - You are 120m from the flagstick and the pin is positioned at the front of the green behind a bunker. - You usually hit 120m with your 9 iron. What club should you use in this situation? |

|
Instead of picking your 9 iron and taking dead aim, try selecting an extra club, in this case your 8 iron, and aim for the middle back of the green.
Your ball might not land close to the flag but a long putt is still far safer then struggling in the bunker if that is your weakness.

If you select your 9 iron which hits 120m, it will require a near perfect shot to get the ball close to the flag.
The slightest miss hit will result in your ball landing in the sand trap, which will most probably bring a big number into play.

Reduce Your Score with Course Strategy

When playing an unfamiliar course, one needs to first acclimatize to the external conditions. Only then can you exercise the appropriate judgement on how to play your game, and adapt your body and techniques accordingly.
The strategy for getting the ball to the green with the fewest number of strokes lies in knowing the layout, avoiding trouble and planning 2 shots forwards. For example, on a dogleg fairway, look for the target area to land your first shot which would give you the safest angle to play the second shot. |

|
Around the green, assess the contours of the green and the area of the green you can work with.
If your ball is near the apron and the pin is near or even downhill, putt.
If there is a considerable area of the green to work with but the pin is downhill, you can opt for a high chip and land the ball close to the pin, or a low chip and land the ball closer to the apron.
If the pin is uphill, a chip and run with a low loft iron would be easier to get the ball to the pin. |
